About Rockwood Park
Historic Green Space with Modern Appeal
Rockwood Park spans a generous 171 acres in Chesterfield County, just outside Richmond, Virginia. As the county's oldest park (established 1975), this natural oasis sits at the crossroads of Courthouse and Hull Street Roads, offering an ideal escape from city life without a long drive.
Open daily from 7AM-10PM (closing at 9PM on Saturdays), there's ample time to explore everything this versatile green space has to offer - if you're looking for a quick morning jog or an afternoon of family fun.
Trails That Take You Places
One of the park's standout features is its 5.5-mile trail network that meanders through dense forests and alongside peaceful streams. Both paved and natural paths accommodate everyone from serious trail runners to families with strollers. The moderate hills add just enough challenge to keep things interesting without being overwhelming.
Keep your eyes peeled as you wander - the woodlands are alive with local wildlife. You might spot woodpeckers tapping away at tree trunks, hawks soaring overhead, or turtles sunning themselves by the water. After a good rain, the forest floor transforms into a mushroom hunter's paradise, and if you're lucky, you might even glimpse native orchids blooming in their natural habitat.
ADChurch Hill Chillers Ghost Tour
Birthplace of the American Revolution, and home to a notorious Civil War spy, Church Hill's colorful past has produced a cadre of restless spirits in its buildings, its graveyards, and under its streets! Cloaked in the shadows of the beautiful and historical Church Hill neighborhood, this tour includes the following spirited tales: The story of one of the Civil War's most accomplished spies who still haunts the site where her home once was, the spirits of a Civil War hospital, tales of the paranormal at one of Church Hill's most notable restaurants, and more...
Nature Center: Wilderness Education
The Nature Center feels like stepping into a cozy woodland cabin, but inside you'll discover fascinating displays featuring the park's scaly and slimy residents. Turtles, snakes, frogs, and salamanders are all part of this living exhibit that helps visitors connect with local ecology.
The center runs programs for all ages - from pre-K nature discovery sessions to activities designed for seniors. The staff really knows their stuff and are happy to answer questions about that mysterious mushroom you spotted or the bird call you heard on the trail.
Sports for Every Season
If you're more into active recreation, Rockwood doesn't disappoint. The park has seven baseball/softball fields, three basketball courts, eight pickleball courts, and six tennis courts - all with lighting for evening play. The basketball courts are particularly popular after dark, with lights that stay on late enough for pickup games after work.
Beyond the main attractions, you'll find horseshoe pits and sand volleyball courts scattered across the grounds, ensuring there's something for every sports enthusiast.
Ruff House Dog Park
Four-legged family members have their own dedicated space at the Ruff House Dog Park. This thoughtfully designed area features separate enclosures for small dogs and all dogs, allowing pups to socialize and exercise safely off-leash. The rest of the park welcomes dogs too, however you'll need to keep them leashed on the trails and in common areas.
Kid-Friendly Spaces
The playground at Rockwood Park offers a well-maintained space where children can climb, slide, swing, and explore. With equipment suitable for various ages, it's the kind of place where kids can burn off energy while parents catch a breather on nearby benches.
When hunger strikes, numerous picnic areas provide a fantastic setting for a family meal. From simple tables under the trees to covered pavilions with grilling stations, these spaces can accommodate casual lunches or reserved gatherings like birthday parties and family reunions.
Beyond the Basics
What sets Rockwood apart are its specialized features. Try your hand at the archery range, where multiple lanes with targets line a shaded path. Test your navigation skills on the orienteering course, or grow your own produce in the community garden plots. Clean restrooms located throughout the grounds make it comfortable to spend a full day exploring.
Community Connections
The park becomes especially active during its special events. From April through November, the Latino Farmers Market transforms Saturday mornings (8AM-1PM) into a vibrant community gathering with fresh produce, handcrafted items, and tempting food trucks. Throughout the year, the park hosts festivals, charity walks, and community celebrations that bring neighbors together in this shared green space.
