About the Location
History and Origin
Situated in Seattle's Madrona neighborhood, Alvin Larkins Park is a cozy urban retreat sitting on the north side of E. Pike Street between 34th and 35th Avenues. The City of Seattle snagged this little piece of land back in 1973 and transformed it into the public space we enjoy today by 1975.
In 1979, they named it after Alvin Larkins, a popular local who called Madrona home from 1949 until he passed away in 1977. Larkins wasn't just any resident - he was a talented jazz musician and dedicated teacher whose contributions to the neighborhood ran deep, representing an important chapter in the area's Black history.
Landscape and Features
The park is a natural gathering spot for locals and offers a peaceful green escape from city life. Mature maple, pine, and fir trees create a lovely canopy, while cherry trees put on a gorgeous pink show each spring that's definitely worth catching if you're in the area.
A meandering path invites you to take a leisurely stroll through the grounds, with comfortable benches strategically placed along the way when you need a moment to sit and breathe. The whole layout perfectly captures the charming character that makes Madrona special.
Recreation Space
At the heart of the park lies a generous lawn area that's ready for whatever activity you have in mind. On those rare sunny Seattle days, you'll discover people throwing frisbees, having impromptu picnics, or simply sprawling out on the grass with a good book.
The open design makes this a natural spot for community get-togethers, from family barbecues to casual neighborhood gatherings.
Community Value
What Alvin Larkins Park lacks in size, it makes up for in importance to the neighborhood. It provides a quiet refuge for both residents and anyone visiting the Madrona business district who needs a moment of green tranquility.
Its central location and welcoming vibe have made it a cherished community asset that honors its namesake through its role as a space for connection and everyday joy. It's one of those special pockets of nature that contributes to Seattle's network of urban green spaces.
