About the Location
A Glimpse into History
Counterbalance Park got its name from something pretty cool: the historic Counterbalance line, a cable car system that once ran nearby. From 1901 to 1940, these streetcars used a clever counterweight system to tackle the steep slopes of Queen Anne Hill - a neat bit of engineering ingenuity that left its mark on the neighborhood.
Thoughtful Design
Set in Lower Queen Anne, this compact urban space spans about 12,000 square feet (1,100 square meters). It's the creative brainchild of landscape architect Robert Murase and artist Iole Alessandrini, who completed the park in 2008.
You'll notice how the design blends modern aesthetics with historical nods. The concrete retaining walls along the north and east edges aren't just practical - they're part of what gives this little park its distinctive character.
What Makes It Special
The park has a simple but intentional layout with two contrasting areas: an outer section featuring warm ipe wood decking running alongside the streets, and a larger inner area covered with decomposed granite. This minimalist approach creates an interesting play of textures as you move through the space.
If you visit after sunset, you're in for a treat. The park's lighting system is its crown jewel - programmable LED fixtures illuminate the concrete walls and corner elements from 5 PM to 2 AM nightly. This thoughtful lighting design has earned Counterbalance recognition as "Seattle's best after-hours park."
What You'll Find There
Though small, the park offers practical amenities for a quick urban escape. A few small picnic tables and benches provide spots to sit, have a coffee, or enjoy a quick lunch while watching the bustling intersection nearby.
A handful of small trees add touches of greenery to this predominantly hardscaped space. Just know that you're at a busy intersection - this is more of an accessible urban plaza than a traditional park setting.
Its Place in the Community
Counterbalance Park is a modest urban oasis in the lively Lower Queen Anne neighborhood. It offers a streamlined space for brief moments of calm, casual meetups, or simply appreciating thoughtful modern design that honors the area's historical roots.
