About the Location
History
Found in West Seattle's Delridge neighborhood, this 14-acre green space has been serving the community since 1912. Delridge Playfield has worn many hats over the years - starting as a school site, briefly housing mill workers during World War II, before evolving into the recreational space we know today.
Facilities
Right next to the Delridge Community Center (built in 1992), you can find sprawling lawns great for an impromptu game of catch or kite-flying adventures. Mature trees dot the landscape, offering welcome shade on sunny days.
Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the synthetic turf field that accommodates baseball, softball, and soccer games. Thanks to good lighting, the fun doesn't have to end when the sun goes down. The tennis courts provide a classic option for racket sports, while the newly added pickleball courts have quickly become a local favorite.
One of the park's standout features is its skate park, drawing boarders of all skill levels. For families, there's a playground with swings and climbing structures where kids can burn off energy. Parents can get their own workout in on the outdoor fitness equipment conveniently positioned nearby - well-suited for keeping an eye on the little ones while squeezing in some exercise.
Recent Improvements
Late 2023 brought some significant upgrades to Delridge Playfield. The field now features a state-of-the-art synthetic turf system with cork fill instead of rubber - a healthier choice for players and the environment. The pathways received an accessibility makeover too, but you might notice some areas of the turf could use a touch-up.
Summer Features
When temperatures rise, the park's wading pool becomes a magnet for families looking to cool off. The generous lawns transform into perfect picnic spots, ideal for spreading out a blanket and enjoying the Seattle summer.
Community Use
This playfield truly functions as the neighborhood's outdoor living room. It's home to various sports leagues and community programs while offering plenty of space for both organized activities and spontaneous play. The variety of amenities attracts locals looking for outdoor activities.
Practical Information
The park welcomes visitors daily from 4AM to 11:30PM. You'll find street parking available, with more spaces on the park's south side, however it can fill up quickly during popular sports events. Located with convenient freeway access and nearby food and coffee options, it's an easy place to spend a few hours. Just keep in mind that grassy areas can get soggy during Seattle's famous rainy periods, and when the community center is closed, bathroom options may be limited to portable toilets.
