About Columbia Park
A Piece of History
Columbia Park is a modest 2-acre green space in Seattle's Columbia City neighborhood, with roots stretching back to September 1891, when Frank and Kate Black filed the original plat designating the space. That early version of the park was actually larger than what exists today - it extended further north and east into land that is now Rainier Playfield. When the city annexed it in 1907, the park incorporated a natural ravine that once flowed into Wetmore Slough (now Genesee Park) and Lake Washington.
The Black family's connection to the neighborhood didn't end with the park's founding. In 1912, they donated a portion of the park's land to make way for the Columbia Branch of the Seattle Public Library, which still stands adjacent to the park today. While urban development has reshaped much of its original landscape over the decades, this little park remains a pleasant green space in the neighborhood.
Nature's Quiet Corners
What Columbia Park lacks in size, it makes up for with character. Two magnificent maple trees stand as the park's natural centerpieces, offering generous shade and a touch of majesty to the open grassy areas. These leafy giants have witnessed decades of neighborhood change while remaining steadfast.

Situated alongside busy Rainier Avenue, the park creates a green buffer against the urban hustle, offering a peaceful pocket where you can escape the constant hum of traffic. It's the kind of place where you can sit quietly, breathe deeply, and reconnect with a bit of nature amid the city landscape.
Community Connections
The park sits right next to the Columbia Branch of the Seattle Public Library, creating a natural pairing - grab a book and find a spot under one of those magnificent maples to dive into your latest literary adventure.
Columbia Park often feels like a neighborhood gathering spot, with a space that's both communal and tranquil. Its central location in Columbia City makes it easily accessible and contributes significantly to the neighborhood's walkable, livable character.
Happenings in the Park
The natural amphitheater-like shape of the terrain makes Columbia Park surprisingly well-suited for watching performances. On occasion, the space comes alive with events like Honk Fest West, where street bands fill the air with joyful noise and community spirit. Each summer since 2012, SEEDArts has also organized a free series of family-friendly events in the park, bringing in concerts, theater performances, and outdoor movie showings - a good reason to check what's on the calendar before you visit.

Every Wednesday from 3 - 7 PM, the park transforms into a bustling Columbia City Farmers Market, a neighborhood fixture that has been running since 1998. Market-goers often extend their visit by spreading out on the lawn for an impromptu picnic after browsing the stalls.
What You'll Find
There are several picnic tables scattered throughout the park, but they tend to fill up quickly on nice days. Many people simply bring blankets to spread across the ample lawn areas for afternoon reading sessions or relaxed get-togethers.
While you won't find playground equipment here, the park is decidedly dog-friendly, making it a favorite destination for neighborhood pups and their humans. The uncrowded, laid-back atmosphere creates a comfortable space where both two-legged and four-legged visitors can enjoy a bit of outdoor time without the crowds of larger parks.
