About the Location
From Gas Plant to Gathering Place
Perched on the north shore of Lake Union in Seattle, Gas Works Park is a fascinating 19.1-acre public space that beautifully blends industrial heritage with recreational opportunity. What makes this park stand out? It sits on the former site of the Seattle Gas Light Company's gasification plant that operated for 50 years until 1956.
When the park opened to the public in 1975, landscape architect Richard Haag made a bold choice that would forever change urban park design - instead of demolishing the old industrial structures, he preserved them. This decision transformed the space into one of America's most distinctive parks.

What You'll Find There
Strolling through Gas Works, you can't miss the massive metal towers and industrial remnants that dominate the landscape. They've been carefully cleaned and painted, with some incorporated into a children's "Play Barn" area where the past meets playtime.
Need a better view? Make your way up "The Great Mound" - affectionately known as "Kite Hill" by locals. This artificial hill was created from excavated soil and offers panoramic views of Lake Union, Seattle's skyline, and on clear days, Mount Rainier in the distance.
While some of the industrial structures remain safely fenced off, they create a striking backdrop that gives the park its unmistakable character.

Things to Do
Gas Works has become a favorite spot for spreading out a picnic blanket, launching colorful kites into the breeze, or simply relaxing with friends. If you're in Seattle on the Fourth of July, this is prime territory for watching the fireworks illuminate the sky over Lake Union.
The Burke-Gilman Trail runs along the northern edge of the park, making it easy to incorporate a visit into your bike ride or walking route. The expansive grassy areas provide plenty of room for impromptu frisbee games, yoga sessions, or just lounging with a good book.
Kids particularly enjoy the playground with its unique equipment. The playground has safety features incorporated into the ground surface. On some days, you might catch the rhythm of community drum circles or local musicians adding a soundtrack to the scenery.

The Views Are Everything
The 360-degree vistas from Kite Hill are impressive. From this vantage point, you can take in downtown Seattle, the iconic Space Needle, and the constant movement of boats and seaplanes on Lake Union.
If possible, time your visit for sunset - the view of the fading daylight over the water with city lights appearing is particularly nice. It's no wonder photographers consider this one of Seattle's premier spots for cityscape photography, regardless of when you visit.

Good to Know Before You Go
You'll find free parking for up to four hours in the spacious lot. Restrooms are available and typically well-maintained, although they close around 9 PM. During busy times or special events, you might see additional portable toilets.
Feel free to bring your four-legged friends - the park welcomes dogs, and you'll see plenty of people walking their pets along the paths and open areas. If you're traveling by bicycle, the Burke-Gilman Trail provides direct access to the park.

A Note on Environmental Awareness
Despite its lakefront location, swimming and launching boats are prohibited here due to contaminated sediments - a lingering reminder of the site's industrial past. Ongoing environmental remediation work continues to address this legacy, balancing historical preservation with ecological responsibility.
