About the Location
Tucked Under the Bridge
South Passage Point Park is a little urban oasis hiding in Seattle's Eastlake neighborhood. At just 0.9 acres, it's not exactly sprawling, but what this pocket-sized park lacks in size, it makes up for in uniqueness. Dedicated in 1977, it sits right under the massive Ship Canal Bridge along the south side of Lake Union/Portage Bay's shoreline.
There's something almost poetic about this spot - the rumble of Interstate 5 traffic overhead while the gentle waters of Lake Union lap at the shore below. It's that classic Seattle juxtaposition of urban infrastructure and natural beauty that somehow just works.
Across the Water
If you look across the lake, you'll spot North Passage Point Park, South Passage's sister park on the opposite shore. The two create a nice visual balance across the waterway, like bookends to this section of Lake Union.
What's Going On Lately
Heads up - the park has gone through some changes recently. In December 2021, parts were fenced off as a safety precaution because of potential debris concerns from the I-5 bridge overhead.
You might still find some areas of the park fenced off with restricted access depending on when you visit. It's all part of ongoing safety measures related to the bridge, so don't be surprised if some sections are off-limits.
What You Can Do Here
Despite being compact and occasionally restricted, South Passage Point still offers plenty to enjoy. The waterfront location makes it a prime spot for launching your kayak or canoe for a paddle around Lake Union.
The park comes equipped with a boat launch for small watercraft, making water access a breeze. You'll also find picnic areas for a relaxing lunch with a view, restrooms for convenience, and a parking lot if you're arriving by car - which is pretty handy in this part of Seattle where parking can be tricky.
