About the Location
A Glimpse into the Past
Located in Spokane's Perry District, Grant Park spans a generous 12 acres of green escape. What started as a modest 2.97-acre playfield (originally dubbed the U.S. Grant Playground) has grown into something much more significant. The park got its major growth spurt in the late 1960s thanks to the Interstate 90 construction, expanding to its current 12.62-acre footprint.
From Swamp to Community Treasure
This park has quite the glow-up story. Back in 1974, when the park was rather unflatteringly nicknamed "Grant Park Swamp" due to neglect, something beautiful happened. A true community effort involving Washington State University, the 4-H Foundation, Standard Oil, and neighborhood residents came together to install new playground equipment and breathe life back into the space. Fast forward to summer 2023, and the city has continued this tradition of care with brand new play structures for the next generation.
What You'll Find There
Grant Park offers a variety of amenities. Kids can choose between two playgrounds - including a newer tot lot added in 2023 that's ideal for the little ones, while older children have their own space to explore.
Feeling active? The basketball court, tennis courts, and two baseball fields offer plenty of options to get your heart rate up. When you're ready to relax, claim one of the two covered picnic areas with plenty of tables - some tucked under mature trees for natural shade on sunny days.
During summer months, the splash pad becomes the park's hotspot, where children can cool off and play in the water. And yes, there are seasonally open restrooms plus typically a portable toilet available year-round (always good to know!).
Where the Neighborhood Comes Together
This green space is an important gathering place in the Perry District. The Thursday farmers' market transforms the park during summer months, bringing live music and a buzz of activity that draws people from all over. The park's gazebo hosts various community celebrations throughout the year.
Nature in the City
The addition of a community garden in recent years has added another dimension to Grant Park, offering local residents a chance to get their hands dirty during growing season. Large open fields provide plenty of room for impromptu games, picnics, or just letting kids run wild. The mature trees scattered throughout not only offer tempting climbing challenges for adventurous children but provide much-appreciated shade during those hot Spokane summers.
Part of Something Bigger
Grant Park is conveniently situated within the Perry District. You can spend time at the park, then walk to nearby local restaurants, bakeries, and breweries. Its location makes it a good starting point for exploring the district.
