About the Location

Natural Oasis

Nestled in Tacoma, Washington, China Lake Park spans 31 acres of largely untouched wilderness. It's a place where you can escape the city buzz without actually leaving the city limits.

The centerpiece of this natural retreat is one of the largest lakes in Tacoma, encircled by dense forest and wetlands. While the lake isn't quite as expansive as it once was historically, it still remains the central feature of this peaceful area.

Trails to Wander

A loop trail meanders around the lake, stretching about half a mile to three-quarters of a mile. Perfect for a quick morning jog or a leisurely afternoon stroll when you need to clear your head.

The path varies in character as you make your way around - parts of it are wide and relatively flat, while others, particularly on the lake's north side, narrow down with more roots and can get quite muddy. Overall, the terrain is forgiving with few challenging obstacles, making it accessible for most people. Just be prepared for some serious mud if you're visiting during the rainy winter months!

Wildlife Haven

China Lake Park doubles as a vital refuge for local wildlife. On any given day, you might find yourself sharing the space with various creatures that call this place home.

When the sky is clear, ducks often dot the lake's surface, peacefully paddling about. Keep your eyes peeled for frogs, catfish, crappie, and various shore birds that thrive in this environment. The park's wetland ecosystem represents the natural systems that once flourished throughout Pierce County, giving you a glimpse of what the region looked like before urban development.

A Storied Past

The park comes with an intriguing history and competing stories about how it got its name. Community tales from the early 20th century speak of rumored underground tunnels near the lake, supposedly dug by Chinese immigrants in the late 1880s when anti-Chinese sentiment in Tacoma made their presence illegal in the area.

Alternative accounts suggest that the lake was originally known as "Lake Tacoma" before locals began calling it "China Lake" due to its proximity to a Chinese community that settled nearby. In the early 1900s, Tacoma had a notable Chinese population, many working in railroad construction and other demanding industries. Despite facing discrimination, these communities established roots in various parts of the city, including the area around what we now know as China Lake Park.

Visitors can learn more about this fascinating history from an informational board within the park.

The Experience

China Lake Park has an understated charm. Its largely undeveloped state offers a wilderness experience that contrasts with the surrounding neighborhoods.

The amenities are minimal - a small parking area at the trailhead equipped with a garbage can, and an open meadow grassy area with a small bench where you can sit and take in the surroundings.

While you won't find playgrounds or restrooms here, the natural beauty and tranquility more than make up for it. It's particularly cherished by locals as a peaceful retreat that rarely feels crowded.

For Four-Legged Friends

If you've got a dog, China Lake Park is a great option for your daily walks. Technically, dogs should be on leash, but you might notice not everyone follows this rule.

The relatively flat trails make for easy walking, and many dogs seem to enjoy the natural setting and occasional wildlife sightings. It's a refreshing alternative to more manicured city parks when your furry friend needs some exercise and enrichment.
