About the Location
A Piece of History in Downtown Vancouver
Dating back to 1853, Esther Short Park isn't just any green space - it's the oldest public park in Washington state. Spread across 5 acres in the heart of downtown Vancouver, this park has been a central gathering place for generations. Over the years, it's had its fair share of makeovers, with major renovations in the early 2000s breathing new life into this historic gathering spot.
Eye-Catching Landmarks
You can't miss the Salmon Run Bell Tower soaring 69 feet into the sky, home to 25 cast bronze bells that add musical charm to the park. Keep an eye on the tower's glockenspiel, which emerges at scheduled times to tell the story of the Chinook Indians through intricately carved figures - a little bit of clockwork magic in the middle of the city.
When spring arrives, the park's rose garden bursts into color with over 100 rose bushes creating a fragrant retreat. During summer months, the interactive water feature becomes a favorite spot to cool off - especially welcome during those hot Pacific Northwest afternoons.
Mature trees create perfect shady spots around the park, making it easy to find a comfortable place to relax with a book or picnic. As you wander the walking paths, you'll discover various artistic installations that add character to your stroll.
A Playground for Everyone
The park's recently renovated inclusive playground stands out as a thoughtful space where kids of all abilities can play together. Instead of traditional bark chips, you'll find soft turf surfaces that make the area safer and wheelchair-accessible. The playground features specially designed equipment including an accessible merry-go-round, seesaw, and swings that welcome children of all physical capabilities.
One of the coolest features has to be the giant xylophone that turns playtime into a musical adventure. With climbing structures and slides built right into a hillside, this playground was clearly designed with creativity and inclusivity in mind.
Where Community Happens
The park really comes alive during its many community events. From mid-March through October, the Vancouver Farmers Market takes over on weekends, filling the space with local vendors selling fresh produce, handmade crafts, and delicious food. Summer evenings bring free concerts and movies under the stars, while cultural festivals add diversity to the calendar all year long.
The Wine & Jazz Festival draws music lovers, holiday celebrations bring seasonal cheer, and cultural gatherings like the 4 Days of Aloha festival showcase the community's diverse heritage. These events bring the park to life throughout the year, making it an important part of Vancouver's cultural scene.
Perfectly Positioned
One of the best things about Esther Short Park is its location in downtown Vancouver. You're just a short walk from the scenic waterfront, and surrounded by local restaurants, shops, and cultural attractions. This central spot makes it both a convenient meeting place and a peaceful urban retreat - somewhere to pause before or after exploring everything else downtown has to offer.
