About the Location
Natural Retreat
Tucked away in Monona, Wisconsin (right next to Madison), Frost Woods Park is one of those cozy locations that locals treasure. This cozy park offers a seriously woodsy experience - hence the name - and has a small sandy beach that provides direct access to Lake Monona.
You'll find this peaceful spot along the 5800 block of Winnequah Road, where a small parking lot welcomes visitors. What makes this park special is how the dense tree canopy creates natural shade and a tranquil backdrop - meant for spreading out a picnic blanket or simply sitting back to watch the wildlife do its thing.
Get Your Game On
If you want to shoot some hoops, the park's basketball court is available - and there are actually basketballs provided for public use. No need to remember to bring your own (though you certainly can if you have a lucky ball).
There's also a well-maintained baseball field that's versatile enough for softball tournaments, kickball games, or whatever field sport strikes your fancy. Local teams often claim the space, but there's plenty of room for casual players too.
Kid-Friendly Zone
The playground here is a definite highlight - clean, safe, and thoughtfully designed for various age groups. It really shines for kids 6 and up, with enough challenging obstacles and structures to keep them engaged.
What's nice is that this playground tends to attract a steady stream of families throughout the day. Your little ones will almost always find playmates here, making it a natural spot for kids to make new friends while burning off energy.
Lake Access
While not exactly a sprawling beach resort, the modest sandy area provides a great entry point to Lake Monona for swimming and splashing around. Just note that you're swimming at your own risk here - there's no lifeguard keeping watch, and the water isn't monitored for quality. Still, on a hot summer day, having lake access is a definite plus.
The Basics
When nature calls, you'll discover portable restrooms that are kept surprisingly clean considering they're, well, portable restrooms. There's also a water fountain available, but it occasionally takes a vacation for repairs.
During busy times when the small lot fills up, street parking is readily available, so finding a spot isn't usually a headache.
Seasonal Perks
When winter transforms Lake Monona into an ice playground, the park becomes a popular launching point for ice fishing enthusiasts. The convenient location makes it easy to trudge out onto the frozen lake with all your gear.
If you call Monona home, you can take advantage of the park's kayak and canoe storage options. There's a rack available for seasonal boat storage from May 1 to April 30, however rental fees do apply.
