About the Location
Lake Monona Shoreline
Nestled along the shores of Lake Monona, this 47-acre retreat offers some of the most breathtaking views of downtown Madison and the State Capitol building you'll come across anywhere in the city. The water-meets-skyline vista is seriously frame-worthy.
The park has a bit of history to it, too. What started as Monona Park back in 1912 got a name change in 1923 to honor John Olin, the visionary behind the Madison Park and Pleasure Drive Association. Thanks, John!
Historic Pavilion
At the heart of the park stands a charming pavilion with quite the backstory. Built in 1884 as a lecture hall for the Wisconsin Sunday School Assembly, this structure has seen generations of Madisonians come and go. It can host up to 150 people, making it great for gatherings both intimate and lively.
After a 2000 renovation that restored its original "barn" aesthetic while adding modern amenities, the pavilion has become a sought-after spot for weddings and celebrations. The combination of rustic architecture and lake views creates a pleasant setting for events.
Recreational Opportunities
If you're looking to break a sweat or just chill out, Olin Park has plenty of options. The mix of open lawns, shady wooded areas, and lakefront access gives you plenty of options for your outdoor adventures.
You can hop on the Capital City Trail or Wingra Creek Path for a walk, run, or bike ride. If water activities are more your thing, there's a convenient boat launch where you can get your fishing or paddling fix.
Bringing the kids? They'll love the playground, while the open fields are well-suited for tossing a frisbee or spreading out a picnic blanket. On hot summer days, the public beach offers a refreshing escape from the Wisconsin heat.
Seasonal Events
The park transforms during the year to host some of Madison's favorite community gatherings. Winter brings the Holiday Fantasy in Lights from mid-November through early January - a dazzling light show you can enjoy from the warmth of your car.
Beer enthusiasts flock here in summer for the Great Taste of the Midwest festival, while the winter Polar Plunge draws the brave (or perhaps slightly crazy) to jump into the icy lake for Special Olympics. Talk about dedication!
Scenic Views
Let's be honest - one of the main reasons to visit Olin Park is for those incredible skyline views. The Madison cityscape reflected in Lake Monona's waters is something special, especially from one of the thoughtfully placed benches along the shore.
If you can swing by at sunset or after dark, you're in for a treat. The city lights dancing on the water create a peaceful, almost magical atmosphere that's well-suited for quiet moments of reflection or a romantic evening stroll.
Conservation Connection
Right next door, you'll discover Turville Point Conservation Park, which extends your nature options with more trails and wild spaces. Together with Olin Park, it forms a substantial green oasis surprisingly close to downtown.
The wooded hiking trails on the south side offer a chance to forget you're in a city at all. In winter, these paths transform for cross-country skiing, while year-round they provide a quiet retreat for birdwatching or simply escaping the urban hustle for a while.
