About Knoop Park

A Hillside Haven with History

Tucked away in Little Rock's historic Hillcrest neighborhood, Knoop Park spans 45 peaceful acres that feel worlds away from city life. Dating back to 1930, this community green space began as a Works Progress Administration project - and you can still spot the beautiful sandstone paving stones and semi-circular stone wall laid by those Depression-era workers around the grounds.

The park bears the name of former Little Rock mayor Werner Knoop, who lived with his wife Faith Yingling Knoop in an art moderne house just below the waterworks on Ozark Point, practically in the park's shadow.

Nature's Urban Retreat

What really makes Knoop Park special is its natural setting that somehow balances wildness with care. The landscaped gardens and green spaces invite you to take a deep breath and slow down for a moment.

The scenic overlook is absolutely worth seeking out - from here, you can take in sweeping views of downtown Little Rock, the Arkansas River, and the state capitol building. There are actually two tiers with lookout areas, each offering its own perspective on the city below.

Local residents have created a lovely butterfly garden on an east-facing hillside, along with several flowerbeds they maintain themselves. If you're patient and observant, you might spot some of the park's wildlife residents: rabbits, white-tailed deer, various birds, and if you're really lucky, perhaps even a grey fox.

Trails and Outdoor Enjoyment

The paved walking trails that meander through the park are well-maintained and relatively level, making them accessible for most visitors. Regardless of whether you're looking for a quick nature break or a longer outdoor session, these paths accommodate different preferences and abilities.

Dog owners particularly appreciate Knoop Park - you'll discover biodegradable waste bags available and water fountains designed for four-legged visitors. It's no wonder this has become a go-to spot for Hillcrest residents and their canine companions.

A Space for Quiet Connection

Unlike parks designed around playgrounds and sports facilities, Knoop Park offers something different - a place for contemplation and low-key gathering. You'll find several picnic tables positioned above the trail closest to Martin Street, fantastic for enjoying lunch with a view.

This is a place to walk, breathe, observe nature, and take in those spectacular vistas. Whether you're seeking solitary time with a book, a peaceful conversation with friends, or simply a moment to appreciate Little Rock from a different angle, this is a place that offers a refreshingly understated experience connecting visitors to both nature and the city's past.
