About the Location
A Glimpse into the Past
Situated in Jacksonville's San Marco neighborhood, Landon Park offers a peaceful retreat with a rich history. The park is named after John and Mary Landon, who made this area their home back in 1867.
Their daughter, Julia Landon, left quite a legacy herself - she became South Jacksonville's very first teacher and dedicated an impressive 36 years to education before retiring in 1919.
How the Park Grew
The park first appeared on maps in 1925 as part of the San Marco subdivision. It didn't stay small for long though - in 1939, it more than doubled in size when a nearby street was closed and additional land was purchased.
When you visit, you'll immediately notice the magnificent magnolias and oak trees that create a natural canopy throughout the grounds. Even on hot Florida days, these trees provide welcome shade and create a tranquil atmosphere that makes you forget you're in the city.
Play Areas for All Ages
In 2018, Landon Park got a major upgrade focused on accessibility. Now you'll discover a mix of Kompon playground equipment alongside traditional structures that cater to kids of all ages.
The Kompon section features some pretty cool elements - there's a shell nest swing for gentle rocking, a spinning "supernova" ring that'll make the little ones giggle, quirky "spinner bowls" for twirling fun, and a large climbing cube that challenges kids while helping their development.
Between the two play areas stands a popular rope jungle gym where older children can test their climbing skills. All play areas are cushioned with wood chips for safer landings - making this a spot where parents can relax a bit while the kids explore.
A Butterfly Haven
One of the park's secluded places is its rose and butterfly garden. After Hurricane Irma damaged the original garden, local resident Laura Byres and the San Marco Garden Club stepped in with a beautiful redesign.
They thoughtfully planted milkweed, pentas, black-eyed Susans, and other pollinator-friendly flowers that attract Monarch butterflies. The garden sits to the right of the main entrance - watching butterflies float from flower to flower on a sunny afternoon can be a peaceful experience.
Practical Comforts
Landon Park doesn't forget the basics. You'll come across water fountains to quench your thirst after playtime and a picnic table if you're in the mood for an outdoor meal.
There are plenty of benches scattered around the grounds, meant for parents keeping an eye on energetic kids or anyone looking to sit and enjoy a good book under the shade. The partial fencing adds some peace of mind if you're visiting with younger children who tend to wander.
For the Four-Legged Friends
Your dogs are welcome to join the fun, but they'll need to stay on leash. The park thoughtfully provides free waste bags and convenient trash cans, making it easy to clean up and keep the space pleasant for everyone.
The grassy areas and shaded paths make for enjoyable dog walks - you might even meet some regular canine visitors if you become a frequent park-goer.
Beyond the Park
What makes Landon Park's location special is what's around it. You're just a block away from the St. Johns River and a short stroll from San Marco Square with all its shops and eateries.
This means you can easily turn a park visit into a full day out - perhaps capping off playground time with a riverside sunset view or a treat from one of San Marco's cafés. Just note that while the park doesn't have public restrooms, you can find facilities nearby in San Marco Square if needed.
