About the Location

Historical Background

Landon Park is a charming green space nestled in the San Marco section of Jacksonville, Florida. The park takes its name from John and Mary Landon, who moved to the area in 1867.

Their daughter, Julia Landon, became the first teacher for South Jacksonville's initial school and taught continuously for 36 years until her retirement in 1919.

Park Development

Established on the 1925 plat of the San Marco subdivision, Landon Park more than doubled in size through the closing of an adjacent street and an additional land purchase in 1939.

The park grounds are canopied by several large magnolias and oak trees, providing ample shade for visitors.

Playground Features

In 2018, the park underwent refurbishment to become more accessible. It now features both Kompon playground equipment and traditional playground structures suitable for younger and older children.

The Kompon equipment includes unique elements such as a shell nest swing, a spinning "supernova" ring, "spinner bowls", and a large climbing cube, designed to stimulate play and enhance children's physical and mental development.

Natural Beauty

One of the park's notable features is its rose and butterfly garden. After Hurricane Irma damaged the original rose garden, Laura Byres, along with the San Marco Garden Club, redesigned the space.

They filled it with milkweed, pentas, black-eyed Susans, and other flowers to attract Monarch butterflies, adding a touch of natural beauty to the park.

Location Advantages

Landon Park's location, just one block from the St. Johns River and a few blocks from San Marco Square, makes it a convenient spot for locals and visitors alike.

While the park does not have public restrooms, its proximity to nearby facilities in San Marco Square allows for extended visits.
