About the Location

Park Overview

Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Matanzas River, Washington Oaks Gardens State Park spans 425 acres of Florida's natural beauty in Palm Coast. The park blends meticulously maintained formal gardens with untouched Florida ecosystems.

Breathtaking Gardens

The formal gardens form the heart of Washington Oaks, where native plants mingle with exotic species. Wander along winding paths lined with vibrant azaleas, camellias, and striking birds of paradise.

The rose garden is particularly enchanting, with about 150 hybrid tea roses that fill the air with their sweet perfume when in bloom. Tranquil reflection ponds mirror the sky, all sheltered beneath the sprawling canopy of an old oak hammock.

Fascinating Coastal Features

The park features an Atlantic shoreline with remarkable coquina rock formations. These ancient, honey-colored outcroppings are among the largest on Florida's east coast and are popular with beachcombers and photographers.

Visit during low tide to see these formations in their full glory, when the receding waters reveal tiny worlds within tide pools, each teeming with fascinating marine creatures.

Natural Florida at Its Finest

Beyond the gardens, you'll discover several pristine Florida ecosystems. A mature coastal maritime hammock covers much of the upland area, where Southern live oaks, magnolias, and hickories create a lush canopy overhead.

On the Matanzas River side, you can lose yourself in peaceful views of tidal marshes stretching toward the horizon. Keep your eyes peeled for playful dolphins breaking the river's surface - a common and delightful sight here.

Rich History

The land has stories to tell, from its early Native American inhabitants to its various owners through the centuries. In 1936, Louise Powis Clark, wife of industrialist Owen D. Young, purchased the property and transformed it.

She named it "Washington Oaks" as a nod to a previous owner who was distantly related to President George Washington. In 1964, she gifted the property to Florida with one important condition - that her cherished gardens would always be maintained.

Trails and Exploration

Lace up your walking shoes or hop on your bike to explore the network of trails winding through diverse habitats. The Bella Vista trail system offers 1.8 miles of paths through maritime hammock and coastal scrub.

For a shorter jaunt, try the half-mile Mala Compra trail with its lovely views of the Matanzas River's tidal marshes. Thanks to the generous shade from towering live oaks, these trails remain comfortable even during Florida's warmer months.

Visitor Comforts

You can find all the essentials for a comfortable day out. Clean, air-conditioned restrooms are conveniently located near the parking area and by the river. The gift shop offers unique treasures created by local artists - ideal for remembering your visit.

Shaded picnic areas with tables and charcoal grills dot the property, with the riverside spots being particularly scenic. If you're bringing little ones, there's a playground near the picnic facilities that makes family outings a breeze.

Wildlife Encounters

As part of the Great Florida Birding Trail, Washington Oaks is a haven for birdwatchers, with over 200 species recorded in the area. Keep your binoculars handy!

You might also spot white-tailed deer stepping delicately through the underbrush, gopher tortoises ambling along, or if you're really lucky, river otters or elusive bobcats. The riverside area is excellent for watching dolphins and various seabirds going about their day.

Community Gatherings

The park comes alive during special events all year long, including an Earth Day celebration and the festive Holiday in the Gardens. Monthly activities like guided garden walks and plant sales bring together visitors and locals who share a love for this special place.

The park's ancient oaks and formal gardens make it a popular setting for weddings and photography.
