About Ben Burton Park

A Glimpse into History

Once upon a time, this peaceful spot was home to a bustling hydroelectric generating station, built in 1896 and powering the area until 1964. In 1967, Georgia Power donated the land to the county, and by October 1971, the park was officially dedicated to honor Ben W. Burton, a former Vice President of Georgia Power.

If you're curious and know where to look, you can still find visible remnants of one of the region's first hydrodams scattered across the park. These historical ruins remain as evidence of the area's industrial past and may pique your curiosity during your visit.

Natural Wonders

Ben Burton Park spans 32 acres of protected wilderness just off Mitchell Bridge Road in Athens, Georgia. Managed by the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department, this wildlife preserve combines natural beauty with historical character.

Part of the park is dedicated to a streambank stabilization project that helps improve the health of the local waterway and reduces erosion - important work that supports the area's wildlife.

Keep your eyes peeled for the diverse wildlife that calls this place home. Deer often appear like ghosts between the trees, turtles sun themselves on logs, and if you're lucky, you might spot an armadillo waddling along the trails. Just remember to watch your step - snakes, including copperheads, are native to the area.

Trails to Explore

The park features a 1.4-mile pedestrian trail that meanders through upland forest and follows the curves of the Middle Oconee River. Just follow the orange blazes and let nature unfold around you.

With its mineral surface, the trail welcomes walkers, joggers, and nature enthusiasts of all kinds. Some sections climb ridges that'll give your legs a good workout, while others offer a more gentle route along the riverside. The tree canopy provides welcome shade during Georgia's warmer months - which, let's be honest, is most of the year.

Feeling adventurous? Numerous off-trail paths and deer trails branch off the main route, offering a more immersive wilderness experience for those willing to venture deeper.

River Recreation

The Middle Oconee River flows through the park, providing opportunities for water activities. There's a boat launch for canoes, kayaks, and inflatables - just make sure to follow Georgia's boating regulations while you're paddling along.

Bring your fishing gear if you'd like to try your luck in the river. Just remember to have a valid Georgia Department of Natural Resources fishing license and follow state freshwater fishing regulations.

On hot days, nothing beats cooling off in the river, especially in spots with small beaches and natural pools. The shoals and rapids create a soothing natural soundtrack across the park. Watch your footing though - those rocks can be slippery when wet!

Rest and Relax

When you're ready to refuel, several picnic tables scattered across open spaces invite you to enjoy a meal surrounded by nature. There's also a covered pavilion with additional seating for those seeking shade or shelter. Note that fires are only permitted in the provided charcoal grill - an important rule that keeps the forest safe and healthy.

Clean restrooms and a water station near the entrance ensure your basic needs are covered. For peace of mind, there's also a 911 call box for emergencies.

The parking lot has ample spaces even during busy weekends, and there's no charge for parking.

Furry Friends Welcome

The park is popular with dog owners. Your four-legged companions are welcome but must be kept on leashes no longer than 6 feet and under control at all times - rules that help keep everyone safe while protecting the park's wildlife.

The park is especially popular with dog owners thanks to several spots along the river where pups can splash and cool off. Dog waste stations with bags are conveniently located within the park, making it easy to clean up after your pet and keep the trails pleasant for everyone.
