About Lucky Peak State Park

Three Distinct Units

Just a short 8-mile drive southeast of Boise, you'll find Lucky Peak State Park - a getaway from city life without having to venture too far. The park is divided into three unique areas: Discovery, Sandy Point, and Spring Shores, sprawling across about 240 acres.

The park hugs the shores of Lucky Peak Lake, a beautiful reservoir created when the Boise River was dammed.

Recreation Areas

If you're just passing through, the Discovery unit offers riverside picnic spots and fishing access to the Boise River. Looking to cool off? Head to Sandy Point at the base of the dam, where you'll find a generous sandy beach with calm waters that are excellent for splashing around. The kids will love the water features right at the shoreline.

Fair warning - the water here stays pretty chilly even during heat waves since it flows down from the mountains. The beach is a mix of sand and small pebbles, so you might want to bring water shoes to keep your feet happy.

For the boating enthusiasts, Spring Shores at the northern end of the lake offers boat ramps, a marina, and everything you need for a day on the water.

Beach and Swimming

Sandy Point has a family-friendly swimming area. The water stays shallow - rarely deeper than 5 feet even as you wade toward the middle - making it a safe spot for younger swimmers.

During summer, you can rent paddle boards, inner tubes, and other water toys if you didn't bring your own. They'll even loan you life jackets if you need them. The calm water makes it suitable for paddleboarding or kayaking, especially for beginners.

Amenities and Facilities

You can find plenty of picnic tables scattered around the park, along with built-in BBQ grills (just remember to bring your charcoal). The grassy areas with shade trees provide nice spots to spread out a blanket and relax.

The restrooms are clean with proper flushing toilets - always a plus for a day outdoors - and there are water spigots where you can rinse the sand off before heading home.

If you're feeling active, challenge your friends to a game on one of the two volleyball courts, or bring your own lawn games to enjoy on the spacious grassy areas.

Disc Golf

Disc golf enthusiasts will appreciate the park's challenging course, especially those first seven holes that wind through the foothills. Depending on when you visit, you can experience either the winter or summer layout, each offering its own unique challenges.

Accessibility and Popularity

You can bike to Lucky Peak from downtown Boise via the Boise River Greenbelt. If you take this route, keep an eye out for the scale model of the solar system along the path - a quirky little educational feature that adds some fun to the journey.

With over half a million visitors each year, this isn't exactly a hidden retreat. Summer weekends get particularly busy, so arriving early is your best bet if you want good parking and a prime spot on the beach.

Natural Features

The views of rolling foothills surrounding the blue waters of the reservoir create a scenic backdrop during your visit. Just be aware that the water level can change dramatically throughout the year since the reservoir's main job is flood control, not recreation.

Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife while you're visiting. The nearby Boise River Wildlife Management Area is an important winter home for deer and elk. You'll also likely spot Canadian geese and other waterfowl hanging around the park - they're practically locals.

Seasonal Considerations

If you're planning to bring your four-legged friend, timing matters. Dogs aren't allowed at Sandy Point during the peak season (May 1 to October 1), but they're welcome - and can even be off-leash in certain areas - during the off-season.

While most people think of Lucky Peak as a summer destination, don't overlook its off-season charm. Some visitors actually prefer the peaceful winter atmosphere to the bustling summer crowds.
