About Jordan Park in Minneapolis
Jordan Park is a community green space located in North Minneapolis, Minnesota. Spanning 3.63 acres, this urban park offers a variety of recreational facilities for residents and visitors. The park is situated approximately 10 minutes north of downtown Minneapolis by car.
Originally the site of Jordan Junior High School, which was demolished in 1985, Jordan Park was established to address the shortage of playing spaces in the neighborhood. The park is named after Charles M. Jordan, a former superintendent of Minneapolis schools who played a significant role in promoting the development of playgrounds and athletic fields in city parks during the late 1890s.
In recent years, Jordan Park has undergone several improvements to enhance its facilities and appeal. In 2007, the park received renovations including new playground equipment, a picnic area, additional shade trees, regrading of the berms around the park, and improved lighting. More recently, in 2023-2024, the park underwent further upgrades, including the replacement of the existing wading pool, addition of a new restroom building, and other amenities to better serve the community.
The park is known for its family-friendly atmosphere and serves as a central gathering place for the Jordan neighborhood. It offers a mix of active and passive recreation opportunities, catering to visitors of all ages. The park's proximity to the Hmong International School also makes it a popular spot for students and families after school hours.
