About Phelps Park in Minneapolis
Phelps Field Park is a public recreational area located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The park spans 31 acres and offers a variety of amenities for visitors of all ages. It was originally called Chicago Avenue Field before being renamed in 1939 after Edmund J. Phelps, a long-serving park commissioner who played a significant role in Minneapolis parks development.
The park underwent significant improvements between 2020 and 2022 as part of a master plan approved in 2016. These updates included the installation of new play areas catering to different age groups: one for children aged 2-5 and another for those aged 5-12. A notable addition was the replacement of the old wading pool with a modern splash pad, which opened in July 2022. The splash pad features a central mist sprayer and several water jet sprayers, providing a refreshing play area for children during warmer months.
Phelps Field Park boasts a range of sports facilities, including basketball courts, a football field, soccer fields, and softball fields. In 2010, two baseball fields were upgraded with funding and support from the Minnesota Twins Community Fund and The Toro Company. The park also features a newly added mural on the basketball court floor, designed by local artist Jendayi Berry in the summer of 2022 to honor the community's positive spirit and promote economic inclusion.
For those seeking relaxation, the park offers picnic areas with charcoal grills, benches, and walking paths. During winter months, an ice skating rink is maintained, typically operational from mid-December through mid-February, weather permitting. The park is open from 6 am to midnight daily, providing ample opportunity for community members to enjoy its facilities.
The Phelps Recreation Center, located within the park, is operated in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of America. This collaboration allows for a variety of youth programs and activities to be offered to the public.
