About the Location
Lake and Landscape
Powderhorn Park spans approximately 66 acres in South Minneapolis and features the scenic 11-acre Powderhorn Lake at its center. The park's sloping landscapes and leafy greenery provide a tranquil escape for visitors.
Established in the late 19th century, the park's name originates from the curved shape of the original lakebed that resembled a powder horn, though changes to the landscape have altered the lake's shape over time.

Recreation Opportunities
The park offers multiple sports fields, tennis courts, volleyball courts, and a basketball court for team sports and casual games. Updated playgrounds, a wading pool with interactive water features, and expansive lawns make it ideal for children and families.
Powderhorn Lake, while not suitable for swimming due to algae, remains a popular spot for fishing from the shore or pier. The lake is stocked annually with species such as bluegill, bass, and catfish.

Community and Culture
Powderhorn Park fosters a rich sense of community through its cultural and artistic events. The annual May Day Festival, known for its large puppetry and creative themes, and the Powderhorn Art Fair, a celebration of fine arts, are notable highlights.
In winter, the park transforms with a skating rink on the lake and an unofficial sledding hill. The recreation center within the park offers classes, meeting spaces, a kitchen, and a music studio, catering to a wide range of community needs.

Neighborhood Identity
This park is not only a recreational destination but also an emblem of the Powderhorn neighborhood's diverse and progressive spirit. Its history as a space for community activism and inclusivity contributes to its unique identity, making it a cherished resource in Minneapolis.
