About the Location
A Green Oasis in the City
Located in the northwest corner of Albuquerque near Hanover Road, Laurelwood Park offers a welcoming piece of nature for locals looking to escape the urban bustle. Though modest in size, this well-kept green space packs in plenty of charm and practical amenities.
The park features a generous grassy expanse dotted with towering shade trees that create cool, dappled retreats from New Mexico's sunshine. We're happy to report that recent additions have expanded these shaded havens throughout the grounds - a thoughtful touch that makes summer visits much more pleasant.
Walking trails connect seamlessly to the park from nearby neighborhoods, making it an easy destination whether you're out for a morning stroll or looking for a quick nature break. Despite not being the largest park in Albuquerque, the grounds are consistently maintained and provide a refreshing natural setting within the city limits.
What You'll Find Here
If you're planning to spend some time at Laurelwood, you'll find several picnic tables scattered around the grounds, including one nestled under a pavilion for those days when extra shade is a must. Perfect for family lunches or casual meet-ups with friends.
Comfortable benches offer quiet spots to sit and read, people-watch, or simply enjoy a moment of peace. There's also a drinking fountain on-site - a basic but essential feature, especially after a game of basketball or during those warmer months.
Note that the park doesn't have public restrooms, so plan accordingly before your visit. While generally peaceful, the park can get lively during weekends and after school hours.
Fun for All Ages
Families with kids will appreciate the thoughtfully designed play areas. The park features a toddler playground specifically created for the 2-5 age group, as well as a separate playground for older children ages 6 and up, ensuring age-appropriate play spaces for different developmental stages.
One of the standout features has to be the umbrella-style shade covers installed over the playground areas. These protective canopies keep the play equipment cooler and help shield little ones from UV exposure - a particularly thoughtful touch in Albuquerque's sunny climate.
For the more actively inclined, there's a basketball court where you can shoot some hoops or join in on an impromptu game. Whether you're looking to enjoy a peaceful picnic, let the kids burn off energy, or get some exercise, Laurelwood Park offers a versatile setting for everyday outdoor enjoyment in a natural environment.
