About the Location
Historic Origins
Nestled in the Strathmore neighborhood on Syracuse's south side, Upper Onondaga Park spans 67 peaceful acres of community greenspace. What started as a former city reservoir transformed into something special in the early 20th century.
The legendary landscape architect Olmsted had a hand in designing this gem, which now offers breathtaking panoramic views of downtown Syracuse and has become a beloved outdoor retreat for locals and visitors alike.
Scenic Hiawatha Lake
At the heart of the park sits Hiawatha Lake, a charming man-made lake created in 1911 from the old reservoir. The lake's stone bridge and picturesque gazebo have witnessed countless wedding photos and community gatherings over the years.
When winter blankets the park, the frozen lake comes alive with pond hockey and winter festivities as locals embrace the seasonal transformation.
During warmer months, you'll spot fishing enthusiasts trying their luck at this popular fishing spot, patiently waiting for their next catch.
Recreational Facilities
Active visitors have plenty of options here. The park features eight tennis courts, three basketball courts, and recently renovated pickleball courts for those looking to get their game on.
Families with little ones gravitate toward the large wooden playground with equipment for various age groups. On hot summer days, the adjacent splash pad provides welcome relief from the heat. The 50-meter outdoor swimming pool accommodates up to 352 swimmers and has lifeguards on duty throughout the summer season.
Walking and Nature
The well-maintained paths circling the lake form the Monday Mile Trail, a roughly one-mile loop great for your morning jog, afternoon stroll, or casual bike ride.
Towering mature trees create patches of cool shade around the park, while open grassy areas invite impromptu picnics or lazy afternoon reading. The seasonal foliage puts on a different show every few months, making each visit uniquely beautiful.
The park's tranquil atmosphere offers an escape from city life within the Strathmore neighborhood.
Picnic and Gathering Areas
Planning a get-together? The park offers multiple picnic areas with spacious tables and a large pavilion that's ideal for family reunions or birthday celebrations. Some spots come equipped with grills - fantastic for those weekend cookouts.
The charming gazebo area continues to host special events, including the summer Pops in the Park concerts that bring neighbors together under the open sky.
Historical Features
History buffs will appreciate the park's architectural treasures, including a neoclassical greenhouse dating back to 1917 and a thoughtfully restored firebarn now serving community purposes.
The park's natural beauty creates a stunning backdrop for photographers, with many high school students choosing these scenic grounds for their prom and graduation photos.
