Location and Access

Set in Durham, North Carolina, Rock Quarry Park spans a generous 46 acres of recreational space. It's positioned near I-85 and downtown Durham, making it relatively easy to reach whether you're a local or just visiting. It's located next to Duke Regional Hospital and the Army National Guard facilities. There's parking available across the street, however it might fill up quickly during peak times - you've been warned!

Recreation Centers

The park houses the Edison Johnson Recreation Center and the Aquatics Center, offering indoor activities for when the weather isn't ideal. Between these two buildings, you'll discover a variety of outdoor amenities - a playground for the kiddos, a sprayground for cooling off on hot days, picnic tables for that perfect outdoor lunch, and even a grill for the aspiring outdoor chef in your group.

Got a competitive streak? Rock Quarry Park features eight tennis courts that local players flock to. The courts boast a fast playing surface, but they could use some refinishing and better lighting according to regular players. Dog Park

The park also includes space for four-legged friends. The park's dog park includes separate areas for large dogs and the smaller pups (under 30 lbs). This roomy space features mulch/wood chip ground cover, some benches for tired humans, and water access for thirsty dogs. Just a heads-up - after rain, things can get a bit muddy with some uneven spots where water collects. There's also a K9 memorial honoring service dogs within the dog park area.

Rock Quarry Park offers good connectivity throughout its grounds. A short trail links the recreation and aquatic centers to the main field and tennis courts. The park also plugs into Durham's broader greenway system, giving you easy access to the Ellerbe Creek Trail and beyond.
