History and Dedication
Veterans Park is a 15-acre urban oasis located in downtown Tulsa, Oklahoma. Originally known as Boulder Park, it was rededicated as Veterans Park in 1990 to honor all Tulsa County veterans.
The park stands as a visual reminder that freedom comes at a cost and pays tribute to those who have served in the military. Each Memorial Day, the park hosts special events including a Field of Heroes commemoration.
Memorial Features
The park features several memorials commemorating the service of Tulsa County veterans from various conflicts. A permanent memorial, dedicated in 1954, stands in a small grove of trees and honors citizens of Tulsa County who gave their lives in defense of the country.
In 1985, a commemorative obelisk was added, dedicated to members of the armed forces from Tulsa County who sacrificed their lives for the nation. This obelisk specifically mentions World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.
Landscape and Amenities
Veterans Park offers scenic walking paths that wind through lush greenery and alongside a tranquil pond with water features. The paved walking trail encircles the pond, offering picturesque views of the downtown Tulsa skyline while strolling through the park.
The landscape includes open grassy areas ideal for picnics or relaxation, though there are no formal picnic tables. Several benches throughout the park provide comfortable resting spots for visitors with mobility issues.
A man-made waterfall adds to the park's serene atmosphere, and children enjoy watching the minnows swimming in the pond. The park is particularly beautiful during fall when the foliage changes color, making it a popular spot for photographers.
Wildlife and Natural Features
The park is home to various wildlife including birds, rabbits, and ducks that populate the pond area. The combination of water features and green spaces creates a peaceful natural environment within the urban setting.
Visitors can enjoy both sunny and shaded areas throughout the park, with mature trees providing cool respite during warmer months.
Dog-Friendly Environment
Veterans Park is a popular destination for dog owners. The open areas provide ample space for dogs to exercise, and many residents enjoy walking their pets along the trails.
Dog waste stations with clean-up bags are available at the front of the park to help maintain cleanliness. While dogs are welcome, it's recommended to keep them on leash, especially near the pond area where wildlife may be present.
Community Space
In addition to its role as a memorial, Veterans Park functions as a gathering place for community events and activities. The park has hosted weddings and community fundraisers, including the Tulsa Great Strides walk.
An event center within the park offers a spacious venue with an excellent projector system for organized functions. The park continues to be a popular spot for both quiet reflection and recreational pursuits, providing a serene escape within the urban environment of Tulsa.
