A Glimpse of Eugene History

Dating back to the 1850s, these downtown squares were once known as "hitchin' post square" - a name that gives you a glimpse into their deep roots in Eugene's story. The Park Blocks as we know them today took shape in 1959, reimagined by local creative minds: architects Wilmsen and Endicott, alongside landscape architect Lloyd Bond.

Split into four square blocks by East 8th Avenue and Oak Street, these blocks sit right in the heart of downtown Eugene, offering a calm retreat from the city bustle.

Where Local Flavors Come Alive

The Park Blocks are home to two Eugene institutions: the Eugene Saturday Market and the Lane County Farmers Market. There's something special about the Saturday Market - founded in 1970, it holds the distinction of being the first of its kind in the entire country. It continues its weekly tradition today, bringing together local artisans, farmers, and musicians.

Here you'll discover everything from fresh, local produce to handcrafted goods - candles, artisan crafts, plants, and seasonal fruits and vegetables abound. The experience is often enhanced by live music performances, adding a soundtrack to your browsing and creating that unmistakable Eugene vibe.

Simple Urban Charm

Though not sprawling in size, the Park Blocks offer thoughtful amenities for anyone looking to pause their day. You can find comfortable benches fantastic for people-watching, open spaces that naturally lend themselves to small gatherings, and a handful of artistic features worth seeking out.

Unlike your typical neighborhood park, this space functions more as an urban plaza - it's designed primarily as a flexible community hub rather than a recreational area with playgrounds or extensive picnic facilities.

Artistic Touches

Art finds its place here too. The untitled 1952 piece by Tom Hardy does double duty in the park - it's both a sculpture and a functioning water fountain, making it one of the more unusual works you'll come across in the space. Alongside it stands "Three Standing Forms", a mid-century sculpture crafted by Jan Zach in 1959, the same year the Park Blocks were redesigned.

A Fresh Chapter

In recent years, the Park Blocks have been getting some well-deserved attention. Thoughtful additions like new seating, bistro tables, and a spacious deck area have transformed the atmosphere, making it more inviting for everyone.

Perhaps the most significant update is the new Farmers Market Pavilion and plaza - a year-round home for the Lane County Farmers Market. This development adds to the Park Blocks' function as a downtown gathering place for community events and local commerce.
