Park Blocks

Historic Significance

Established in the 1850s, these blocks were originally known as "hitchin' post square" and have served as a central gathering place for the community since Eugene's founding. The current Park Blocks are the result of a 1959 redevelopment designed by local architects Wilmsen and Endicott, along with landscape architect Lloyd Bond.

The Park Blocks consist of four square blocks divided by East 8th Avenue and Oak Street in the heart of downtown Eugene.

Community Markets

The Park Blocks serve as home to two beloved Eugene institutions: the Eugene Saturday Market and the Lane County Farmers Market. The Saturday Market, founded in 1970, was the first of its kind in the United States and continues to operate weekly, offering handmade crafts, local produce, and live music.

Art Installations

The space features several notable art pieces, including an untitled work by artist Tom Hardy installed in 1952 and a sculpture called "Three Standing Forms" by John Zach from 1959.

Recent Improvements

In recent years, efforts have been made to revitalize the Park Blocks and make them more inviting and functional for all community members. This has included the addition of new seating, bistro tables, and a large deck area to create a more relaxing atmosphere.

As part of ongoing improvements, a new Farmers Market Pavilion and plaza were constructed, providing a year-round home for the Lane County Farmers Market. This development aims to enhance the Park Blocks' role as a central hub for community gatherings, celebrations, and commerce in downtown Eugene.
