What once housed the bustling Jones & Laughlin Steel Works has, since 2012, transformed into a peaceful riverside retreat. South Shore Riverfront Park spans 3.4 acres of reclaimed urban space in Pittsburgh, stretching along the south banks of the Monongahela River from 25th to 29th streets, offering some of the most impressive views of Pittsburgh's skyline you'll find anywhere in the city.

Trail Connections That Go Places

If you're a trail enthusiast, you'll appreciate how this park cleverly connects the Great Allegheny Passage with the Three Rivers Heritage Trail. The designers tackled a challenging 40-foot elevation difference between the street and river levels using switchback terraces that make the descent manageable for everyone. The paved paths are smooth and well-maintained, with sections that wind through just enough tree cover to provide welcome shade on sunny days.

What To Do Here

If you're looking to get in your morning jog, take a leisurely bike ride, or simply sit by the water with your thoughts, this park is a great option. Early mornings here are especially peaceful - just you, the river, and the gradually awakening city across the water.

Just a heads-up: the trails are popular with cyclists who sometimes zoom by at considerable speeds, so keep your wits about you while walking. Still, there's something therapeutic about spending time here, a little pocket of calm amid the urban landscape.

What You'll Find

The park's 1,000-seat amphitheater (which can hold up to 2,000 for standing events) functions as a community gathering spot. Throughout the warmer months, you might catch anything from live music to community celebrations happening in this outdoor venue.

For water enthusiasts, the park offers well-maintained boat and canoe launches, making it easy to get out onto the Monongahela. Several picnic areas are scattered throughout, well-suited for anything from a quick lunch break to a family gathering. And if you've brought your four-legged friend along, they'll love the dog park near one of the entrances, where they can run off-leash to their heart's content.

Beyond the Park

One of the nice things about South Shore Riverfront Park is how it connects to the surrounding area. You can easily extend your visit by checking out nearby restaurants and shops, making for a full day of outdoor recreation paired with good food or a bit of shopping.

The neighborhood continues to evolve, with ongoing development projects further enhancing the area's appeal and accessibility.

The Making of a Riverfront Location

Creating this urban oasis was truly a team effort. The City of Pittsburgh, Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), Riverlife, Department of Public Works, The Soffer Organization, and South Side Local Development Company all collaborated on the $13 million project, funded through a mix of public and private sources.

In 2017, the park grew even better with an expansion across Water Street into Tunnel Park, adding amenities like a kiosk, pergolas, and improved signage to make the space more welcoming and easier to navigate.
