About the Location

Trail Overview

The Aldridge Creek Greenway stretches 5.49 miles through South Huntsville, Alabama, winding alongside its namesake creek. This paved path offers a blend of natural scenery while being conveniently tucked within city limits.

The trail has separate lanes for different activities - one for those on foot and another for wheeled activities. Whether you're walking your dog, training for a marathon, cruising on your bike, or showing off your rollerblading skills, there's space for everyone here.

Connections and Route

Starting at Bailey Cove Road in the north, the greenway meanders south until it reaches Ditto Landing, where it joins the Tennessee River Greenway. It's a connector of neighborhoods, making it easy for locals to hop on for their daily dose of fresh air.

As you travel along, you'll pass under bridges and through changing landscapes that keep the journey interesting. If you're up for a challenge, a complete round trip from Bailey Cove to Ditto Landing and back covers about 11-13 miles - fantastic for when you're feeling ambitious or training for that next big event.

Wildlife and Natural Features

The greenway is home to wildlife that might make you forget you're in a city. Keep your eyes peeled for otters playing in the creek, turtles sunning themselves, or beavers building their homes. Bird enthusiasts will appreciate spotting herons, cranes, kingfishers, and hawks, while lucky visitors might catch glimpses of deer or even coyotes.

The creek itself invites interaction - there are plenty of spots where you can cool your feet, wade in, or try your luck fishing. As you approach Ditto Landing, you'll see panoramic views of Green Mountain and the Tennessee River swampland.

Parks and Amenities

The greenway connects to several parks that offer not only pretty scenery but also various amenities. Ken Johnston Park near Bailey Cove and Southside Park feature playgrounds where kids can climb, swing, and slide to their hearts' content.

Dog owners will appreciate the adjacent dog park where four-legged friends can run free. And yes, your furry companion is welcome on the entire trail - just be sure to use those conveniently placed waste bins.

For those seeking additional recreational activities, check out the disc golf course or try your hand at the archery range connected to the greenway.

Picnic Areas and Restrooms

Need a break? You can find rest benches and picnic areas dotted along the trail. Grab a spot near the playground at Southside Park, find a table off Mountain Gap Road, or enjoy your lunch with particularly beautiful views along the Tennessee River Trail near Ditto Landing.

When nature calls, restroom facilities are available at Southside Park, McGuckin Park, and Ditto Landing. Just be aware that some longer stretches of the trail might require a bit of planning between bathroom breaks.

Accessibility and Features

The mostly flat terrain makes this trail welcoming to users of all fitness levels - no mountain-climbing skills required! One thing to note: parts of the greenway offer little shade, so on sunny days, bring your hat, sunscreen, and water bottle.

Getting to the trail is easy with multiple access points and parking areas. Start your journey at Ken Johnston Park, near Mountain Gap Road, or at Ditto Landing - whatever's most convenient for your adventure.

Community Benefits

As the longest greenway in Madison County, this trail functions as both a place to exercise and a community connector. It's part of Huntsville's network of trails throughout the city.

One nice aspect of Aldridge Creek Greenway is how it lets you experience nature without leaving the city behind. The sound of rushing water helps mask urban noise, providing a peaceful corridor with civilization just beyond the treeline.
